By stripping back the walls to their original brickwork and retaining the structural steel beams, the property was pared back to its basics. To emphasise the spacious proportions, one of the double bedrooms was sacrificed to create what must now be one of London’s largest one-bedroom flats.

Thanks to its position at the top of the building, the home commands impressive views while affording unparalleled privacy, whether from the contemporary roll-top bath positioned next to the floor-to-ceiling windows or the outdoor shower on the landscaped roof terrace.

The interiors were completed with a mix of modern furniture and mid- 20th-century antiques; other items were custom-made, including the large blue sofa that has an eye shape, while the footrest doubles as a bed for overnight guests.

Naturally, many of the pieces were sourced from Portobello Road. “I love 1970s lighting, and so I spent hours on the Portobello Road sourcing original lights,” says the owner. “I also made the large mirror using an old picture frame from one of the local shops, spraying it and getting a mirror put in. Similarly with the glass cabinet – it was a cheap purchase which I sprayed entirely black aside from the back which was painted purple. I also inserted a blue light into it, and now it’s my favourite piece". The EXIT sign is from Islington – perfect for when guests overstay their welcome.

“I fell in love with the height of the flat and the structural metal beam that runs through the flat,” adds the owner. “It has such a different feel to other flats in period properties in the area and as I’ve always loved that loft look, it was the perfect canvas for me to have some fun and create. I look at it and think, ‘What else would I do now?’ and really I don’t think there is anything, even after all these years.”

The flat is undoubtedly one of our favourite properties that we have marketed, with incredible wow factor. So chic and effortlessly cool.
