WESTBOURNE PARK ROAD
The musician owner of this house created a home that was a symphony of fine design and good taste. The Victorian house might look like a typical London family home from the outside but one step inside reveals a beautifully crafted masterpiece. Extensively redesigned and remodelled by award-winning De Matos Ryan Architects, the double reception was large enough for the owner to indulge his musical passions with a grand piano in the library.
The owner also achieved what is often attempted but rarely accomplished: a harmonious blend of contemporary stylings while still retaining beautiful period details. The cornicing had survived virtually unscathed through the centuries, as had the period fireplaces in both the reception and principal bedrooms. However, thoughtful improvements were made to the original Victorian architecture, including a large plate glass window extending from the lower ground floor through to the reception rooms on the ground floor level, providing a feeling of light and spaciousness.
The lower ground floor was an open-plan dining room, kitchen, cinema and playroom which also boasted a spiral wine cellar capable of storing up to 1,600 bottles. Storage was also incorporated into this family home with a large walk-in pantry and numerous cupboards and closets. As inspiring as this space was, it is rivalled by the first-floor master suite with its beautifully decorated master bedroom, dressing room and stunning bathroom. This bathroom must be one of the most breathtaking in London, boasting a Drummonds bateau bath with polished cast iron exterior, a double shower and a double sink carved from a single piece of limestone.
This is a home that sets the benchmark for family living. Simply incredible.
