Architecture

One to watch, this RIBA-Chartered architecture practice has been tapped as a rising star by the Architects Journal. An award-winning, 40 under 40 firm.

Whether it’s ingenious retrofit projects or the radical reimagination of an office block into flats, Alma-nac’s energetic spirit and out-of-the-box thinking have earned them commissions across the residential, commercial, cultural and arts sectors; their AJ Retrofit Award-winner House-within-a-House is just one example. Co-founded by Chris Bryant, Caspar Rodgers and Tristan Wigfall in 2009, Alma-nac’s appetite for experimentation led them to explore the power of collaboration and participation in democratising architecture.

Their bold designs are both a response to and a result of the characteristics of the space, its context, their client’s wishes and a harmony between form and function. Of particular note is their unparalleled ability to mould their blueprints to confined plots; their ‘Slim House’ project on St John’s Hill slotted a terraced house into a 2.3m-wide former stable access between two properties. Their Wedge House and In-Betweeny House developments faced similar uncompromising restrictions. Pursuing a sustainable agenda, they want to build for a more environmentally-conscious future.
