Nantes… probably not the first place that comes to mind when you think of nightlife destinations or must-go bars. Things are set to change with Le Nid, an utterly barmy and brilliant sky bar at one of France’s tallest buildings, Tour Bretagne.
Towering 144m over the city, Le Nid was crafted by London-based designer Jean Jullien to deliver a bar that centres round a docile 40m-long half-heron, half-stork and its eggs, which form the bar’s stools and tables. Typical of Jullien’s bold, whimsical illustrative style, the bar sits proudly in the big bird’s rear while its neck stretches around the entire space. Spot how the eyes of the sleepy bird’s head open and close as drinkers move in and around his scattered eggs.
Commissioned by Le Voyage à Nantes – a key arts initiative for the city – Le Nid is simply a fun and wildly imaginative egg-sellent bar, quite different from anywhere else in the world.
